Our Creative Place - BSL and English

The opportunity

What is special about being a creative in the area where you live?

Creative Cardiff is working in partnership with Arts Council of Wales to commission a creative practitioner from each of the local authority areas that make up the Cardiff Capital Region (Blaenau Gwent; Bridgend; Caerphilly; Merthyr Tydfil; Monmouthshire; Newport; Rhondda Cynon Taf; Torfaen; and Vale of Glamorgan) to produce a piece of work each that expresses what it means to be a creative in that area.

We want to work with you to further develop the story of a growing, and increasingly connected, creative community across the region.

The story is yours to tell….

Our creative place graphic with colourful map of Cardiff Capital Region

You may wish to produce a piece of work that reflects your experience of being part of your creative community during the COVID-19 pandemic. How has your practice adapted and how have you connected with others in your creative community at this time?

Or you may have a brilliant story about being a creative in your area which is not related to the pandemic.

The creative output could be: a performance of a new piece of writing, an animation, a short film, a digital artwork, an object made and photographed, a piece of music set to visuals. These are examples, so please do not let them limit your imagination.

No piece should exceed five minutes in length and can be as short as you see fitting to best tell the story. We welcome applications from a range of creative practitioners working in different disciplines, languages and mediums. We welcome pieces that reflect the identity of each place.

The work must be suitable to be displayed as part of a digital story map.

You can see examples from the 2020 Our creative Cardiff storywall here. The Our creative place story map will also be hosted on the Creative Cardiff website in a similar format.

This project is open to self-employed creative practitioners only.

Please contact us via email or phone (02922 511597) if you have any questions about your idea or would like any assistance with your application.

The budget

We have a budget of £1,000 per practitioner which includes fee and expenses.

We will provide additional support [i.e. access/BSLI etc] where necessary in order for you to participate in this opportunity.

We will be considering access from both the perspective of the creative and those experiencing the pieces commissioned, taking a creative approach to this process.  Therefore, an aptitude and interest for considering your proposed work manifested in multi-sensory ways is welcomed. As part of the project, you will work alongside an access consultant to develop the accessibility of your work through creative means that are complementary to or embedded in your work.

Why?

At Creative Cardiff, we recognise and champion the importance of networks, connections and placemaking. By extending into the Cardiff Capital Region, we’re looking to build new networks and connections to better understand what the creative community narrative looks like across the region, where activity is taking place and what might happen in the future.

The ‘Our creative place’ project will begin to collectively build the story of a creative region. This project blends economic, social and cultural geographies, underpinned by compelling stories that both reveal and shape the diverse communities who live and work within the region.

The process

The commissioned creatives will work individually but will be required to:

  • Take part in one online initial group ideas session and one group reflection at the end of the project, led by Creative Cardiff’s Project Manager Vicki Sutton. The aim of these sessions is to make connections between creative practitioners.

  • Support us to build creative access resources for your piece.

  • Contribute ideas and feedback to an additional collective ‘reflection piece’.

Audience and sharing

The primary audience is online, but the work may also be featured at a future live exhibition in the region (2021 – TBC depending on COVID-19 restrictions).

The display of the work on the website will be accompanied by very short written descriptions about the responses you have produced.

The creatives commissioned will retain copyright. We will want to be able to use it in perpetuity to tell this story (as outlined in the brief) across our digital channels. The creative will be credited wherever the work is shared.
