The Storyteller’s Story!

We have fantastic stories across our charity, which demonstrate the difference our work makes to people affected by cancer. We use case studies to bring our work to life and ignite a fire in people to support the cause. But we need someone to tell them. And the magic ingredient to bring our stories to life is YOU!

So, we’re looking for an empathetic, skilled writer and communicator who can get to the heart of someone’s story and developing it in an engaging way for use across the charity. Our stories can be found through people who use our services, our fundraisers, volunteers, and supporters.

Giving a voice so people’s stories can be heard when it comes to cancer and the work we do across Wales means this role is super important. It needs to be done right and have impact, so you need to not just be good at what you do - but great. And do it through our communication style, tone and language.

To make up a perfect storyteller, you’ll need:

  • Plenty of empathy, as well as tip-top listening and understanding skills
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to write in different genres
  • Experience in getting to the heart of someone’s story and producing engaging copy
  • Capability to interview and tell the stories of people who have a cancer diagnosis or a person who has lost a loved one to cancer
  • Exposure to writing within brand guidelines using set language and tone of voice that could support our messaging
  • Confidence in building and nurturing relationships, promoting diversity, and supporting our values
  • Sensitivity, respect, and understanding while working within professional boundaries

You might have told stories as a journalist, been a storyteller in the third sector or as a seasoned self-employed writer looking for a part-time contract.

What’s important is you have a professional and creative flair to your written communication style that captures emotive content effectively and have a portfolio to be proud of.

That sounds like me! What’s next?

Let’s get creative!

Send us your CV and the story of you....

Update your CV experience and put pen to paper or get tapping away.

Instead of the usual covering letter, tell us your story. We’re capping things at 500 words for you to tell us what this role would mean for you. What impact do you want to make and why? And, how you’ll go about it. Is there something you’ve done when it comes to storytelling you’re super proud of that could make all the difference to what we’re trying to achieve? What inspires and motivates you to feel passionate about this sort of thing?

As well as looking for a good level of experience and exposure, we’re looking for passion and great attention to detail and creativity. If you can show you can get a handle on our tone of voice, even better.

The Storyteller job:

In this Storytelling role you can expect to be doing things like:

  • Meeting someone we’ve supported through our services to sensitively capture their personal story and communicate the impact we’ve had during their cancer experience
  • Being a copy-writing connoisseur to create short or long form real-life stories for our website, social media or external press
  • Spending an afternoon talking with a volunteer to understand the importance their voluntary experience has for them and the difference it makes to us as a charity
  • Attending an event to capture a fundraising group’s experience and translate that into a persuasive written piece to encourage others to get involved
  • Supporting and working with a team of colleagues in nurturing service-user, supporter and volunteer relationships
  • Creatively capturing content alongside your Digital Content Producer colleague
