Job Purpose

 

The role of Senior Journalist is part of the Visual Journalism and Audiences department, which is where BBC Wales News’ audience and visual expertise sits. As a Senior Journalist, you will be working across the newsroom, 

on output such as the weekly politics and current affairs programme Wales Live, and other BBC Wales News TV and digital services. You will be shooting and editing your own material, as well as working closely with different reporters and producers filming and editing material into engaging content for our audiences.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The Senior Journalist will work across the newsroom to deliver creative, original content for BBC Wales News. You will help deliver agenda setting journalism for BBC Wales’ Wales Live programme and our daily news services.

You will film and edit your own news stories and features, and collaborate with reporters on other stories.

You will take the lead on ensuring output is of the highest visual and creative standard, working alone or as part of a team, as required.

You will ensure material is delivered to tight output deadlines.

You will use a range of video and digital equipment to shoot, assemble, edit and deliver content, to the highest professional standards – recognising the distinct requirements of different services and ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve.

You will work to tight deadlines, and on breaking news in a fast changing environment, as well as on longer term stories and ideas.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

You will have a significant understanding and knowledge of the political, cultural and geographical landscape of Wales.

You will be able to demonstrate excellent editorial decision making and an understanding of media law.

You will have a strong track-record in finding stories, contacts and case studies to create original and creative content for News and Current Affairs programmes.

You will be experienced in editing material quickly and creatively, under pressure, to meet output deadlines.  You will also able to film your own material to a high standard.

You will have strong leadership skills to support a team and lead a project.
