Panel debate on Skills for Sustainability identifying the vital skills needed by Cardiff’s creative graduates and freelance workforce.
A skilled workforce is the bedrock of any thriving creative cluster. Are we doing enough to ensure we have a sustainable, talented and diverse workforce in Cardiff and the wider region?
In our fast-paced creative industries how does the growing freelance workforce best keep their skills up-to-date? What are their professional development needs and how can education providers, industry, trade unions and skills bodies help meet them together?
This panel debate will focus on how to sustain Cardiff’s talent pipeline asking who will lead the skills for sustainability agenda? The panel will be chaired by Ruth McElroy, Professor of Creative industries at the University of South Wales, and will feature Professor Justin Lewis, Pauline Burt and Faye Hannah.
Professor Justin Lewis
Professor Justin Lewis is the former Dean of Research in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and former Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University. He has written and edited many books about communication, the cultural industries, news and politics, including Constructing Public Opinion and Citizens or Consumers: The Media and the Decline of Political Participation and Climate Change and the Media. His latest book is Beyond Consumer Capitalism: Media and the Limits to Imagination.
He has led a number of research projects for the BBC, the BBC Trust, Channel 4, the Office of Science and Innovation, the AHRC, the ESRC and Rowntree. He was a member of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework panel for Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Library and Information Management.
Pauline Burt
Pauline is the founding CEO of Ffilm Cymru Wales, formerly Film Agency Wales, having previously worked in commercial film and television finance at London based Mansfield Associates, as Risk Manager to financiers such as the Royal Bank of Scotland and Rand Merchant Bank. Prior to that, Pauline headed up production at Sgrin, the former Media Agency for Wales and worked at Scottish Screen as their Script and Finance Analyst.
Faye Hannah
Faye is a PhD graduate research student at University of South Wales. Her PhD research examines screen industries talent development, creative labour and related policy in the context of Wales as a small nation.
Faye has worked with and for a wide cross section of the UK Creative Industries, including Creative Skillset, BFI and BAFTA. In 2014 she founded ‘Our Colab’ a Wales based consultancy delivering creative industries skills, education and training projects.
