THE ARTIST: Jason Mohammad was born and raised as a Muslim on a council estate in Cardiff. He left school with 5 GCSEs and went on to study Welsh and Politics at Swansea University before completing a Masters at Cardiff University in Broadcast Journalism. Jason lives in the city and is now one of Britain’s highest profile broadcasters working for BBC TV Sport, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio Wales.
THE PROJECT: I wanted to convey the passion I have for my city in written and visual form. Cardiff has given me the opportunity to forge a career in the creative industries, so - in my love letter to the sights, sounds and streets of the city - I also thank those who have played a part in my story. I also wanted to give the love letter a base - given that it was to be filmed. So, we shot it at a place that has a very special place in my heart - the South Wales Islamic Centre. The places and people I have written about have played a crucial role in my journey. The parts of Cardiff featured in the writing and short film have impacted my spirituality, my love of life, world view and trust in people. I would like people to be inspired by my words and key images - simply because creativity, honesty, love, laughter and truth can change people’s lives.
