Any offer of employment with the BBC will be conditional upon you having the right to work in the UK

Welsh language skills are not necessary

Applications may be submitted in Welsh, and an application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.

News Labs is a multi-skilled innovation team that sits between the BBC’s technical and News teams.  We work to improve audiences’ experiences of News and make great storytelling easier for journalists. You can see some of our projects on our website: http://bbcnewslabs.co.uk/

Reaching new audiences and improving our ability to tell good stories accurately and quickly are key to News’ objectives.  News Labs needs people with a wide range of skills who will help deliver those objectives by turning ideas into practical innovations.

We are looking for a journalist who is comfortable with code to help us explore the possibilities of ideas ranging from personalisation to machine assisted storytelling - all while making BBC News content more accessible to a wider range of audiences.

This is a chance for you to shape innovation at the heart of BBC News.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will flourish in a fast-paced environment where making measurable improvements is paramount.  You will work as part of a diverse, multi-skilled team to provide top-quality editorial content, good code for our prototypes and clear insight into user needs.

You will create high-quality and appropriate content for our News Labs projects, maximising the impact for our journalism.  We want you to take part in industry hackathons and external events, collaborating with third parties to bring significant benefit to BBC News.  You will develop relationships between technical and editorial staff by linking groups of interested people around priority areas for innovation and enjoy building productive working relationships with a wide range of innovative individuals and organisations inside and outside the BBC and be comfortable adjusting your style to successfully work alongside each of them.

Are you the right candidate?

We are looking for an experienced journalist with a deep understanding of the global journalism technology landscape and a broad knowledge of news and current affairs combined with the enthusiasm and willingness to experiment and try new solutions to challenges faced by editorial and technical teams.

You should have first-class writing skills, experienced in crafting engaging stories in text, audio or video and a portfolio of professionally published stories.  We are looking for someone who can produce content for social media and engage with the public through social media channels.

You should have some experience of working in a technology innovation environment and working effectively with software teams using the Agile methodology .

You should be able to demonstrate your ability to work well under pressure, adapting to changing projects and prioritises together with the ability to work successfully independently on small projects or collaboratively on larger team initiatives.
