Overview
Creative Cardiff is looking to commission 8 x artists to design a version of Creative Cardiff’s logo, for use on posters in a city centre location, digital assets and an animation. Dimensions and outline will be provided by Creative Cardiff and we are asking artists to work within this outline to produce a design, illustration or other creative interpretation of the logo. Each design will show the logo at a different stage in the process of rotating, which will then be animated together to create one digital asset of the logo in motion, featuring each of the 8 individual designs.
Background
During the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns, Creative Cardiff delivered a number of artistic commissioning activities. These were designed to support local artists, build resilience and enable a range of different creative voices to tell their story at a time of limited cultural consumption. This work included ‘My Creative Cardiff’ – a digital storytelling project designed to showcase the city’s creative sector in 2020 – and ‘Our Creative Place’ in 2021, which brought together and developed the narrative of the creative community across the Cardiff Capital Region, in partnership with Arts Council Wales. Collectively, this work supported 35 local artists and put nearly £40,000 back into the creative community in South Wales, as well as building new partnerships and collaborations.
Creative Cardiff is now seeking to build on the success of this work through delivering a further commissioning opportunity for local artists and creatives and directly connect this to our identity and brand. This work aims to capture what Creative Cardiff is all about- connecting artists, collaborating with the community and showcasing local creatives.
The commission
We are proposing commissioning a diverse range of creative practitioners working in the city across various mediums to produce work that creatively captures what Creative Cardiff means to them.
We are seeking new works that work with the logo dimensions to either:
-
Actively and meaningfully illustrate the city– its venues, its landmarks, its green spaces, its urban architecture – and the people who populate it;
-
Reflect the identity of Cardiff’s diverse communities – both present and future;
-
Reflect the variety of creative sectors which thrive in the city;
-
Show what Cardiff’s creativity means to you.
Commissioned works will help develop and shape our identity and brand- and how we connect to the creatives on our network.
What will happen to the designs
Each design will be printed on a poster and displayed at a city centre location for a 2-week period. We would also like to produce complementary pieces of content to showcase the design and promote the poster location, with profiles on each artist and what inspired their work. These profiles can also be viewed via a QR code on the poster. The designs will also feature on Creative Cardiff’s social media channels and website.
After the 2-week period, a digital animation will be created using each of the 8 designs, which will be used on our website and to top and tail video and social content.
Works may also appear across Creative Cardiff merchandise, comms and branded collateral.
Format
The creative output for commissioned artists should be predominantly visual in scope, or able to be ‘visualised’ for purposes of display and dissemination (e.g. in a physical city centre location, as well as on print and digital collateral).
Submissions might be an illustration, a digital design, an artwork, or photography-based practice. However, these are examples, and this list is not exhaustive.
Works should ideally also reflect on the city and Creative Cardiff’s brand identity.
