Creative Cardiff's 'Show & Tell' is a free, quarterly event that gives a platform to the exciting range of creative people and projects in the city. It brings together Cardiff’s creative community, from emerging talent to old hands, to hear about their current projects and ambitions.

Each speaker will give a 10-minute lightning talk. And they'll bring an object. The object might be the source of their inspiration, a tool of their trade or a comfort blanket. The speakers will share their work and explain the importance of the object they've brought along.

The theme of our fourth Show & Tell event is creative hubs and co-working spaces – places where creative people can come together for networking, business, development and community engagement. Over the summer a number of new creative hubs and co-working spaces have opened in the city so what better time to find out more about the places on offer – and the people behind them.

Speakers

Dan Spain

Dan Spain is a Cardiff-based designer and illustrator working across digital and print for a handful of really cool people.

In 2014 he started Design Stuff, creating a regular opportunity for designers to meet, share knowledge and make friends. Design Stuff is a monthly social event about design…stuff. Each month, two creative professionals talk about a topic of their choice, based in and around design.

Design Stuff speakers have covered topics ranging from 3D design, hand-drawn typography and the power of sketchbooks, through to social media design, working internationally and being taken over by robots! At Design Stuff the community gets together to listen to interesting people, have a few drinks, make some new friends and generally have a good time.

Building on conversations and collaborations initiated by Design Stuff, Dan set up Rabble Studio in June 2016; a co-working community space where creative people can collaborate and do great work.

Louise Harris

Louise Harris is founder and director of the Big Learning Company, which delivers training, content and innovation projects in all areas of learning provision across Wales. Previously a drama teacher and a keen advocate of using technology as a teaching tool, she founded the Big Learning Company when saw that there was a gap in the market for a company that would support schools with expertise to roll out technology in the classroom.

In August 2016, Louise opened Cardiff co-working space Tramshed Tech, based in the newly-converted Tramshed music and arts venue on the corner of Clare Road and Pendyris Street in Grangetown. Tramshed Tech aims to bring together the tech and creative industries, creating an environment in which people want to work together.

Louise says: "Gone are the days where companies will want one huge tower block, where teams are isolated, locked in their own offices, where they can't really collaborate with anyone else. If businesses are going to survive and thrive in this really challenging environment that we’re in at the moment – especially here in a growing city like Cardiff - we have to work together creatively, to collaborate."

Sarah Valentin and Julia Harris

Sisters Sarah Valentin and Julia Harris opened The Sustainable Studio in July 2016. It's taken almost a year to realise their idea - from finding a space to decorating - but it's here and they are happy to be working alongside some amazing people already.

Sarah is a fashion designer and has worked in the industry for more than 15 years. Julia is a songwriter and musician who fell into fashion about seven years ago – a happy accident as together with sister Sarah she now runs DATI, a sustainable clothing brand that will launch later this year.

After starting an upcycling fashion label in 2011 and the success of selling at local markets in south Wales, Sarah and Julia began to run a selection of workshops focusing on recycling clothing waste and teaching basic sewing skills with the charities Barnardo’s, The Prince’s Trust and BAWSO to name just a few.

Over the last two years they have focused on nurturing local talent and supporting creative individuals with the sole aim to see them thrive. At the end of last year, they felt drawn to expand and create an inspiring and inclusive co-working space for like-minded individuals and businesses.

They hope others can benefit from the same support and encouragement they have experienced by being based at The Sustainable Studio. It’s a place to gather, learn, share skills, exchange ideas and knowledge, network, and collaborate on projects not just for business but for the benefit of the wider community.
