About the opportunity

This professional development programme for Welsh writers will take place during Hay Festival (25 May - 4 June) from Saturday 27 May to Saturday 3 June 2023 (arrive Friday 26 May, leave Sunday 4 June). The fully programmed week, curated and led by writer Tiffany Murray, will allow selected writers to attend masterclasses, workshops, and to network with Wales-based, UK and international writers, publishers, press and agents. Tiffany said:

Hay Festival Writers at Work is such a unique programme. It’s a creative writing MA in nine days. It’s a creative and professional space where a new body of Welsh writers form, and go on to do great things. Writers at Work have had Welsh Book of the Year winners, Laureates, prize winners, and quite simply writers who support each other beyond the programme. Being a writer is not an easy thing and the supportive unit that emerges from this programme, to nurture work in years to come; this is the most exciting thing to me about Writers at Work to me.

Hay Festival invites applications from poets, fiction (all genres) and non-fiction writers in English and Welsh. The scheme aims to increase confidence, skills, and to form peer group support for the selected writers, leaving the programme inspired to create new work and achieve their personal ambitions. Writers at Work is free to attend, with a bursary to cover accommodation, travel from within Wales and subsistence on site. The Festival site is fully accessible for wheelchair users and performance venues are fitted with induction loops. Guide dogs are permitted.
