Trainee Audio Producer Placements (2x fixed-term 4-month contracts)

Would you like to pursue a career in creative audio and radio production?

Cardiff-based Overcoat Media (APA Production Company of the Year 2023) has teamed up with Radio Platfform at the Wales Millennium Centre to offer two fixed-term trainee production placements in 2024. One will centre on classical music and the arts, and the other on general documentary and speech content.

Overcoat Media is a leading provider of audio and radio content to the BBC, and also the commercial sector. Its podcast ‘A Positive Life’, presented by Sam Smith, was awarded ‘Podcast of the Year’ at the British Podcast Awards 2024. Overcoat also produces the ‘Mindful Mix’ for BBC Sounds and recently had a big hit with true-crime series ‘The Crossbow Killer’, again for BBC Sounds. The successful applicants will work across a range of BBC network content and beyond.

Lack of industry experience is no barrier to application, and we especially welcome applications from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in the industry.

Salary: £27,000 pro rata

Placements starting February/July

Our ideal candidate

You will have a passion for podcasts and radio, and probably have some strong ideas of what you like and what you don’t. For one of the placements we are particularly interested to hear from candidates with a passion for classical music. The other placement will have a more general focus.

Prior audio experience is in no way essential although certainly useful.

What will you do?

We are looking for trainees to work across our productions, helping to plan, record and edit content primarily for BBC broadcast and publication. You will be involved in every aspect of the production and we will offer training and mentoring as part of the placement.  In particular, you can expect to be involved in:

  • Generating ideas for podcasts and radio programmes
  • Research of subjects, contributors and music
  • Transcribing audio, data management, creating schedules, booking guests, arranging travel, etc.
  • Interviewing people
  • Recording audio in studios or on location
  • Editing and sound design

The placements will be based at our production office between Cardiff and Bridgend, with some potential for limited home working.

What support will you receive?

You will be mentored by a senior member of our creative team and we’ll make sure you get the guidance and training you need during your time with us. Our aim will be to give  you the space to develop your ideas, with the right support around you.

Timescales

Application deadline: 22nd December 2023

Interviews: w/c 10 January 2024

The first placement will begin in February 2024, and the second in July 2024.
