Welsh Music Prize: Papur Wal

The Welsh Music Prize is an annual prize to celebrate the best new music made in Wales or by Welsh people around the world. To celebrate the awards this year, we spoke to some of the nominated artists from Cardiff to ask them about their music and experience of being a creative in the city.

To finish the series, we spoke to Cardiff-based trio Papur Wal, shortlisted for their album Amser Mynd Adra.

Congratulations on being nominated for the Welsh Music Prize! Can you tell us about your shortlisted album?

Thank you very much! Amser Mynd Adra, which is our first album, is a collection of songs that combine the melodic sounds of the 70s from a lot of what we were listening to at the time we recorded the album, as well as elements of our earlier stuff.

How does it feel to be nominated?

Absolutely amazing! A complete dream come true from when we started as a band, especially considering all the other big names that have been nominated too!

What impact has being based in Cardiff had on your work?

We got together as a band towards the end of University whilst living in Cardiff, after years of listening to music with each other and pretending we were going to start a band! At a lot of different locations across the city, we learnt how to look like we know what we're doing!

What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months?

We are looking forward to going back to the studio to work on the second album, and even more than that to see - and be fed by- our producer and dear friend, Krissy Jenkins.

Tell us about any upcoming gigs…

There aren't a lot of gigs lined up at the moment as we focus more on the process of writing and recording the new stuff, but keep your ears and eyes open for any updates.

How can people find out more about you and your music?

By buying our album from the Libertino website!
