Cardiff's creative students showcase their work

As the academic year draws to a close, Cardiff's creative students are taking over the city with an array of end of year shows.

The shows are a great opportunity for students from Cardiff's higher education institutions to showcase and celebrate their work from across the year. With more than 150 creative courses taught across the city, students are a vital component of the creative ecosystem in the city. 

There are a huge variety of shows taking place across all creative disciplines which people come from far and wide to study, such as architecture, fine art, graphic design, illustration, photography, textiles, ceramics, music, drama, musical theatre and many more.

With hundreds of creatives about to start their careers here in Cardiff, this is an exciting time for Cardiff as a creative capital. And what better way to discover Cardiff’s new creative talent than to go and visit their shows? Shows are being held at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, The Welsh School of Architecture, The University of South Wales, Cardiff School of Art and Design and Cardiff and Vale College.

The Welsh School of Architecture

The exhibition will showcase a diverse portfolio of work produced by Bachelors and Masters students. The students are renowned for producing a high standard of work and the school is consistently present in the top five of architecture degree league tables.

Professor Chris Tweed, Head of the Welsh School of Architecture, stressed the importance of student shows. He said: “It provides an opportunity to celebrate the work of our students as everybody’s work is represented and it allows students to show their work to family and friends. It also acts as a ‘shop window’ for students in their third and fifth year for employers. And lastly, we usually sell a catalogue of student work which goes to support the work of the student society.”

Cardiff School of Art and Design

At Cardiff Metropolitan University, their end of year show will exhibit a range of creative specialities, including:

  • architectural design and technology
  • artist designer: maker
  • ceramics
  • fine art
  • graphic communication
  • illustration
  • international design
  • photographic practice
  • production design
  • textiles

Lily Jennings, a Fine Art Student at Cardiff Metropolitan University, explained that the shows help to build a creative community with the public and help students transition into work.

She said: "I think the shows are beneficial for students and the city because they help induct students into the community - both in terms of the local art scene and as a way that members of the public can get involved with both viewing art and interacting with the student body. You also get people coming along to student shows - friends and family etc. - who might not generally be interested in art and visiting galleries. It’s also really good inspiration for young people who might be considering art courses themselves” 

Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama

University of South Wales

At USW creative students are exhibiting their end of year work at the Creative Graduate Festival for 2018. It runs from May until July with most of the shows being freely open to the public. To catch a glimpse of the shows and their progress, follow #CardiffGradFest2018 on Twitter and Instagram.

Lucy Williams, a fashion student at University of South Wales, recognises the importance of these art shows for generating innovative ideas and for creating an awareness of the creativity in Cardiff.

She said: “I really think art shows are important to students as they can inspire and spark emotion that then goes onto generate new and innovative ideas for their own work. Additionally, art shows and performances are beneficial to Cardiff because they show the public the creativity prevalent in the city and the variety of creativity Cardiff has to offer!”

Cardiff and Vale College

This event will see students from all creative industries courses at Cardiff and Vale College, including fashion and photography, come together to celebrate another fantastic year and showcase their creative output.
