CAN has been running for eight years, and has screened some of the best animated short films from the global animation festival circuit, including Oscar and BAFTA-winning shorts. The events give people in Cardiff and beyond a chance to watch independent animation on the big screen or from home and meet like-minded people.
Ellys Donovan, Cardiff Animation Nights' Head Programmer, says:
We love bringing people together at Cardiff Animation Nights to watch great animation. We’re excited to be opening submissions for the first time and can’t wait to see all the amazing work that will be submitted from around the world.
Over the past eight years, Cardiff Animation Nights has grown from reaching an audience of 20 in the back room of a Cardiff pub, to reaching monthly audiences of up to 200 at The Underdog in Cardiff. To date, CAN has screened over 600 animated films at venues in Cardiff and online.
Submissions now open
For the first time, CAN is opening submissions, allowing filmmakers to submit animated films of any genre and up to 20 minutes through FilmFreeway. Each month a programme of short films will be selected to be screened either online or in-person. All films screened in 2023 will be eligible for the Cardiff Animation Nights 2023 awards, with a winning film will be selected by a jury of industry professionals and CAN Audience.
