The Data Justice Lab at Cardiff University is looking for a cultural event to form part of the Data Justice conference scheduled to take place 20th May 2021. The Data Justice Lab is a research initiative based at the School of Journalism, Media and Culture (JOMEC) that engages in research and practice at the intersection of social justice and digital technologies. The Data Justice conference is the second such conference to be hosted by the Lab. The first one took place in May 2018 and brought together over 250 international scholars, practitioners and activists working across different areas relating to data justice.

The conference this year is online only and we are looking to include an online cultural event for the evening of the 20th of May. We are open to different performance styles and formats, but ideally it would include some interactive or participatory element. For example, this could be immersive storytelling, a circus performance or a murder mystery. We are also particularly interested in hearing from Welsh organisations or individuals that engage with social justice themes in their work. We are not able to give an exact number of participants who would attend the event at this stage but can set up registration for the performance to provide such numbers if needed.

We have a budget of £1,000 that could potentially be increased for the right proposal. We welcome proposals of max one-page with an outline of ideas, budget and examples of previous work. Please note that we are happy to have consultations about initial ideas to shape them collectively if relevant.

For inquiries and proposals, please contact Lina Dencik at DencikL@cardiff.ac.uk .
