Cardiff University is seeking proposals from journalists and researchers working in Wales for a research project. The project will be part of the comprehensive research project "Mapping the Welsh Journalism Sector: Understanding the Barriers and Enablers for Successful Public Interest Journalism in Wales" led by Cardiff University and financed by Creative Wales. The goal of the project is to support the Welsh Public Interest Journalism Working Group established in 2021 and the Welsh Government in formulating and creating strategies to create a striving public interest journalism sector in Wales.

- The total project budget should not exceed £4000.
- The project should run from October to December 2023.
The project
In recent years, public interest journalism has had to deal with the decline in newspaper readership, the rise of alternative news sources, the dominance of tech companies, and the ongoing discussion regarding the objectivity and reliability of news sources. These issues have been made more pressing by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has a particular impact on the employment stability and working conditions of journalists.
With a focus on inclusion, user needs, and workforce development, this project seeks will aim to gather in-depth insights from journalists and stakeholders of the Welsh journalism sector about the issues and possible future pathways for public interest journalism in Wales.
Project Activities:
- Conducting interviews and / or focus groups with journalist, representatives of various news outlets and other public and private stakeholders of the Welsh journalism sector (gathering insights from 15-30 journalism stakeholders).
- Analysing and reporting on the findings from the interviews.
- Working in conjunction with the project team to contribute to the final report of the project.
- Supporting the dissemination of the report and findings to various stakeholders through presentations and event participation.
Selection Criteria:
- Good knowledge of Wales and the Welsh language journalism sector.
- Experience in journalism, or related research work.
- Knowledge of the Welsh language.
- Strong communication and report writing skills.
