Tell us about you and your creative background
I am Devika, a recent Media, Journalism and Culture graduate from Cardiff University. Cardiff is a long way from my home- India (Kerala) and I’m at a point where I have finished my degree of three years.
When I think of my creative background, I remember how passionate I was about going into the arts. Since I didn’t have many opportunities in school to study arts, I used to pursue it outside of school whenever I got a chance. My mother was especially encouraging of everything I wanted to do. I remember spending my summer vacations joining classes and soaking every bit of it, quenching my thirst for arts. That was probably my favourite part of the whole year, and when it was time to choose a degree, I knew I had to choose something related to the arts. I love writing, I always have, and when I saw this opportunity with Creative Cardiff being circulated, I knew I had to apply. Most of my previous experiences was in marketing and content creation and I was looking for something that was relevant but in the creative industries. That’s how I landed here.
Tell us about your project with Creative Cardiff
My project with Creative Cardiff was quite an interesting one. I think what I really loved about the role was that even though the main aim was to research, there were a lot of creativity involved. My project focused on the architecture and publishing sectors by drafting campaigns to spotlight these creatives working in those industries. It really helped me understand different industries and the kind of work and struggles they face and the impact they have, especially post-covid.
What aspect of the placement did you enjoy the most?
I think the highlight of my placement was the ClwstwrVerse event that took place in the beginning of July 2022. That is when I got to really meet with the wider team and understand what goes on behind the scenes. Just seeing everyone work together towards a common goal felt extremely rewarding and joyful. I was also working with my dear friend from university, Ezster, during the placement, which made it much more enjoyable! I have often heard from more experienced people in the industry that the best part about work is the people you work with. I think this is probably the first time I actually understood what they meant. The workspace you are in makes a huge difference in how you perceive and grow both professionally and individually which I am thankful and grateful for.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
I think the main challenge that I felt during the course of the placement was the time limit. The placement ran for almost 6-7 weeks and there were a lot of new ideas that came up throughout. But the amount of time I had to plan and execute was limited, which made it a bit stressful and challenging at times. However, the support that I received from my supervisor Carys and everyone in the wider team was unmatched.
What did you learn about the creative community in Cardiff?
I was surprised to know that there were so many creative people and networks in Cardiff, which is often not visible at first glance. I also love how open and welcoming people are to new ideas! Throughout my placement, all the people I have met and talked to were extremely encouraging and welcoming. I think that also makes you want to do your best both as a professional and as a human.
What’s next for you?
At this point, I would like to practically explore what I have learnt and gained from my degree. As a recent graduate, entering into the job market sounds a bit scary but I am also excited to see how life turns out. I want to keep learning and I also want to do a postgraduate degree at some point, after I gain some experience. I enjoy learning and I would very much like to keep that side of me alive and cherish what the future brings!
