My background

I’m Katie, and I’m currently completing my MA in Cultural and Creative Industries at Cardiff University. I’ve lived in Cardiff as a student for nearly four years, having previously completed my undergraduate degree in Journalism, Media and English Literature.

Throughout my academic journey, I’ve always gravitated towards creative projects and my master's degree has only deepened my appreciation for the uniquely vibrant Welsh creative scene, inspiring me to pursue a career within this space.

Despite loving student life in the city, I’ve never strayed too far from my hometown near Caerphilly and will always be proud to call myself a Valleys girl at heart.

Feeding the creative within me

From forcing my friends to be in my Video Star productions at age ten to constantly writing stories and even taking a bold stab at musical theatre (we can’t all be good at everything), my love for the creative arts has always been a core part of who I am.

While I’ve come to accept that I’m not exactly musically gifted, music has still been a constant in my life. Whether it’s soundtracking my life through Spotify playlists or immersing myself in the energy of live gigs, there’s something deeply powerful about how music can express what words cannot and is an area I would love to explore more at some point in my career.

My long list of creative pursuits has never just been a collection of hobbies, but a way of connecting with others and seeing the world. I believe that creative expression, in all its forms, should be something that everyone can access and enjoy, no matter their background or experience.

My passion and purpose: amplifying Welsh creative voices

My placement at Creative Cardiff will focus on regional engagement, an area that resonates deeply with me. Coming from a place where creative opportunities can sometimes feel limited or out of reach compared to larger cities, I’ve seen firsthand just how much talent and innovation thrives within smaller communities. I’m passionate about shining a light on these creatives, helping create space for those voices to be heard and celebrating the rich culture that exists across Welsh regions.

One way I hope to support this goal is by collaborating with the Cynefin Caerffili team who are currently developing Y Banc, a space in the heart of Caerphilly that aims to offer a diverse range of creative programmes.

Creative Cardiff has played a vital role in shaping my own development, and I’m excited to contribute to their brilliant work and help extend their impact even further.
