Tell us about yourself and what is your background?

Shwmae! My name is Ffion and I am currently an undergraduate student at Cardiff University studying Welsh and Journalism. I’ve recently finished my second year and am excited to get stuck into my summer internship with Creative Cardiff! I have a passion for the media sector, especially journalism, with a desire to deliver impactful and newsworthy stories to audiences. My current course and work experiences have allowed me to write a range of different creative pieces such as writing news articles, press releases, content for podcasts and social media posts. These are all skills that I’m excited to bring to this internship! I also have experience in TV production, having done some work experience at ITV Cymru Wales and Boom Cymru earlier this year.

I’m interested in how different marketing techniques reach different audiences and how we can use these findings to boost engagement within the company. The field of Marketing, Communications and Engagement has always intrigued me as a career path, and I am sure that this internship will give me an insight into the work that is involved within these fields. I am eager to learn from industry professionals and I look forward to working with Creative Cardiff to cultivate new skills that will broaden my working horizons.

What's your focus with Creative Cardiff?

I’m thrilled to be helping further integrate the Welsh language as this is something that I feel extremely passionate about as a fluent speaker, originally from Ammanford in Carmarthenshire. It would be rewarding to boost the company’s engagement through the Welsh language to target Welsh speaking talent across Cardiff as I know that there is plenty of it! I would also love to help with the engagement of young people. As a student myself, I’m confident I’d be able to offer some ideas, plans on potential events or workshops and create content across different types of media that would be tailored for students and young adults alike. I’m excited to be assisting with the company’s upcoming events and to work alongside the team on the new exciting project ‘Sut i ‘Steddfod’ ahead of the National Eisteddfod in Pontypridd.

Your favourite place in Cardiff?

I must admit that I am a bit of a shopaholic and I often find myself walking around St David’s shopping centre! The city also has some lovely arcades with independent clothing shops and coffee bars, which are very aesthetically pleasing! During the semester I walk through these arcades most days to get to my journalism lectures and they’ll always hold some sentimental value as they remind me of the chats and laughs that I would have with my course mates on the way to our lectures!

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

I’m particularly drawn to a future in broadcast journalism, with a strong inclination towards television. After graduating, my goal is to secure a place on the MA Broadcast Journalism course at Cardiff University. It’s always been my aspiration to report the news on TV for news organisations such as S4C and BBC Wales. Staying in Wales is a high priority of mine and it would be great to work using the Welsh language to report not only on Welsh communities, but on national and global news.
