The countdown is on until the 2019 Cardiff Design Festival, which will return to the city in October with a stellar line-up of design events.

Cardiff Design Festival originally launched in 2005 and after a short hiatus it’s back with a fresh outlook, a new brand, and a bigger team.

The four aims of the festival, which will run from 10 October until 13 October, are to challenge the definition of design, celebrate Cardiff, reach out and showcase local talent and encourage participation.

The varied line-up includes a homecoming for LA-based illustrator Niki Pilkington, creative talks from Smörgåsbord, Greg Barth and the Yarza Twins as part of It Will Glow and workshops around UX design, service design as well as a Makers Market. See the full line up of the events here.

The Creative Cardiff team will be checking out the Cardiff Design Festival and here are our picks for the weekend:

Project Manager, Vicki Sutton said: “I’m excited to attend the Creative Mornings with Niki Pilkington. I’ve followed her work with brands like Topshop and Ted Baker and love her colourful and inspiring designs.

“It’ll be interesting to hear how she manages to maintain close links with Wales while living in Los Angeles and learn more about how she has managed to build such a successful global brand. I’m hoping she’ll have some prints on hand to purchase as it’s a week before my birthday – great timing!”

Kayleigh Mcleod, Communication and Engagement Manager, said: “I’m picking Warrior Women’s Designers, Makers and Creatives night at Tramshed Tech. The event caught my attention initially because of Cath Jones, founder of Sadler Jones – I am stationary obsessed! I love Cath’s aesthetic and I’m intrigued to learn more about her creative journey.

“When I read that the multi-talented Lizzie Iafrate of Fizz Goes Pop and Rosi Illustration were on the bill too, it became the perfect Friday night."

Communication and Engagement Officer, Beca Harries said: “It’s difficult to pick because every event is so different. I’m looking forward to the Letter Lab as I love fonts and lettering so I like the idea of getting stuck into creating something.

“I’ll also be going to the Smörgåsbord showcase – Inherently Welsh with a Global Outlook. I love what they’ve done with the Cymru Wales Nation brand and the unique typeface they created that gives a nod to our bilingual identity. I think they’re all about a modern and global Wales and I’m all for that.”
