Profile

Studio Response is a limited company founded in 2016 by Emma M Price and Jo Breckon, following on from the work produced by EMP Projects and Associates. We are a Wales-based practice offering diverse expertise and experience of commissioning art in the public realm. We do this by brokering effective partnerships that put artistic practice at the heart of place-making and urban design.

Specialising in creative place-making through the planning and delivery of small to large-scale public art commissions, our projects aim to transform public spaces through sustainable, imaginative and creative commissions in collaboration with our clients.

At Studio Response we:

• Facilitate the making of new work by commissioning exceptional artists, designers and architects to produce permanent, temporary, experiential and socially engaged artworks

• Devise visionary projects that engage communities and foster collaboration in a meaningful way

• Research and respond to the social, economic, cultural and environmental context of each project

• Aspire to deliver projects that are in context locally, but of regional and national significance

• Anchor our projects in a strong curatorial vision

• Advocate for good practice when working with artists, designers and architects in the public realm

• Stimulate debate about the role of creative engagement in the public realm

Our services include:

• Producing Public Art Strategies and Plans

• Developing Public Art Supplementary Planning Guidance for Local Planning Authorities

• Curating, commissioning and managing public art programmes from inception to completion. Here our remit includes:

o Working with specific communities and community groups and facilitating new groups through community engagement
o Writing artists’ briefs and contracts
o Establishing and managing project budgets
o Advising on fundraising for art in the public realm
o Securing capital funding and sponsorship from a variety of sources
o Overseeing the design development process and installation of artworks

• Building relationships with the public, private and third sectors to advocate for art in the public realm

• Researching national and international artists and designers and conceiving new and innovative projects and co-productions

• Devising and delivering creative placemaking CPD for design and planning professionals

• Providing training and advice to clients regarding their role as commissioners of art in the public realm, and to Arts Steering Groups tasked with managing the process

• Evaluating existing artworks

• Producing press and PR material as well as interpretative material and publications.

What sets us apart?

We’re committed to cross-sectoral working and to developing new relationships with the public, private and third sectors. We do this by advocating for the benefits of using artistic practice to respond to the strategic and political contexts each of these sectors face.

We’re particularly interested in forging new partnerships with organisations and businesses for whom engaging with the creative industries is not the norm. We know that for these to embrace any engagement with the arts with any alacrity they need to be clear about its values and the opportunities it can open up. We know that creative and cultural engagement can bring added value and we work hard to make the business case for this.
