Profile

Company of Sirens Theatre Company Ltd is a theatre company which premiers challenging and innovative new drama in theatre and non-theatre venues throughout Wales. The work is developed by Welsh based professionals delivering practical workshops with the main target group for each project, ensuring the productions are experienced through active involvement of as many people as possible with the plays issues. We have a small but very active board of management who are very committed to supporting and developing the company's work. The company also seek to work in partnership with exciting Welsh Artists, vital contemporary writers and charities associated with each project. We create work that addresses issues of today relevant for Welsh audiences and employing Welsh practitioners in its delivery. We uses as a model international performance groups such as the New York City Players, The Wooster Group and Ranters Theatre Australia all of which we have had previous dialogue with. Our work is created through sharing, applying best practice, and the taking of artistic risks. We actively seek to collaborate with like minded companies and individuals. We have presented Welsh premiers of Jennifer Haley's The Nether, Sean Tyrone (Cardiff and Ireland) Stitching (Chapter Arts Cardiff) staged a bare bones presentation of Ian Rowland's play Troyanne that supported the plays international development process. We produced back to back premiers of Philip Ridley's Tender Napalm and Mercury Fur under the title Love Songs for Extinct Creatures and most recently his Dark Vanilla Jungle. These productions were supported by Arts Council of Wales and were very well received. We believe theatre should address issues central to our lives and seek to invoke reaction. We look to extend boundaries by presenting confrontational material as a means of involving and affecting our audience in its issues. We look to unsettle by emotional frankness, and disturb by acute questioning of norms. We want the audience to experience the extreme emotions being shown on stage and to take that feeling and those thoughts with them after they leave the theatre. Our work looks to question individual outlook and provide a platform for debate. We perform in small theatres and spaces, seeking to involve the audience in the action through creative and innovative staging.Wales does not presently have a fringe venue comparable with the Traverse Edinburgh, the Royal Court, Finborough Arms, Bush, Donmar and Almeida. Much powerful and affecting theatre is produced at these venues. We aim to present some of these plays to Welsh audiences. There are many young and emerging practitioners here in Wales producing excellent work. We look to help develop and foster a culture of "risk" among target groups practitioners and writers by practical exposure to the best national and international work, helping to create a culture of extended possibilities and innovation.
