Profile

My one passion, the arts, has always presented me with an issue; its diverse spectrum of possibilities. Consistently, I have found myself drawn to more than one of its elements and excelling in many of them. However, the issue still remained that I could not find my forte.
It has been clear to me from a young age that I enjoy the art of performance, whether writing and developing plays with others, or immersing myself on stage with ‘Bridgend Youth Theatre’. The theatrical arts have been intrinsically tied to my upbringing; however, it wasn’t until I received a place at Patricia O’Neill’s prestigious ‘Saturday Academy’ that I realised my true passion.
Since having singing lessons at the age of nine, I have worked through each of the grades to finally achieve my Grade 8 in classical singing. These exams have given me the ability to perform to intimate audiences, as well as the confidence to audition for various companies, for example the Welsh National Youth Opera. It is here that I developed my performance skills within a group, as well as honing my craft as a solo performer. Experience performing with Col Canto, a local choir, has also bettered my understanding of working in groups, and has enabled me to vocally challenge myself by singing different genres of music. Achieving grade 8 in both Classical Singing and Musical Theatre has also challenged me as a singer, as it requires a different use of the diaphragm. This allows me to switch between different genres of music and sing many styles.
In studying Music ‘AS’ level, I have further compounded my love for a variety of music and composers. For example my research of Hayden at AS level has broadened my knowledge of classical composers and furthered my understanding of the genre. Similarly studying Musical Theatre at AS level has given me an appreciation of how music can engage and heighten emotion through an accessible medium.
I enjoy setting and reaching targets both academically and physically. I have achieved the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and have competed in Athletics. I was successfully accepted into the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Junior Conservatoire. I have also achieved Grade 5 in Harp and am currently working towards my Grade 5 Music Theory.
I am actively involved in the school’s extra curricular activities. I have used my prowess and confidence in performance to sing for local charities, and performed in multiple school musicals and Christmas concerts. My conviction and organisational skills have also enabled me to arrange a Chamber Choir for the school. This choir performed at concerts in many local churches and led to me being appointed to the role of Head of Communication on the head team. I feel that I have adopted the role as an ambassador for the school. I feel privileged to be representing my school and I feel that this responsibility reflects my well-rounded personality. My dedication to hard work has allowed me to succeed in exams whilst also maintaining a variety of extracurricular activities such as amateur dramatics, dance and netball.
I am a voluntary tutor at Bridgend Youth Theatre, where I help young people to work in a team and develop their performance skills. This opportunity has enhanced my ability to lead and assist others, as well as manage money and the general public. I have tutored KS3 pupils in drama, and have been a host at the annual premier for ‘It’s My Shout’ film productions at the Wales Millennium Centre. This consisted of meeting and greeting VIPs, and showing them to and from their seats to collect their awards.
