User Experience (UX) Designer / Researcher

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled User Experience (UX) Designer to work within the Website and Intranet Improvements Programme. The Programme aims to improve the student and staff user experience of the University website, intranets and related digital platforms. Drawing on your industry knowledge, you will responsible for defining and validating the UX direction of a mobile optimised University website and internal intranets. Engaging with senior stakeholders and working collaboratively with teams across the University, you will manage end-to-end user research and design projects including testing processes, delivering a ‘mobile first’ experience to the University’s audiences.

The Website and Intranet Improvements Programme is looking for a skilled User Experience (UX) Designer / Researcher to define and develop the Student and Staff digital experience for Cardiff University. You will be a UX pioneer within the University’s UX function, responsible for the delivery of far-reaching user-centric best practise and the validation of UX improvements, delivering a mobile optimised University website and internal intranets.

Highly experienced in user research and analysis, the post holder will work collaboratively across the University, engaging with a range of internal and external stakeholders, managing user research, design and testing projects, informing and influencing the future direction of UX, within the University.

As part of a cross-functional project team (design, web development and content production), the UX Designer will be responsible for the creation of a new mobile-optimised, modular design language and accountable for implementing UX designs, that will deliver University-wide impact.

Situated only a couple of minutes’ walk from the University campus, you’ll have thousands of potential user test participants on the doorstep.

This post is full time and fixed term for 12 months.
Salary: £32,548 - £38,833 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description

Key Duties

•    Manage the User Experience (UX) design for the University’s systems – external website and the staff and student intranets.
•    Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplined team, researching and designing user focussed digital services, ensuring designs meet web and accessibility standards, adjusting the delivery according to customer requirements.
•    Responsible for providing professional UX expertise to the development team and the broader stakeholder, community supported by evidence-based test outcomes that will have a University-wide impact, ensuring a shared understanding of complex and conceptual user experience issues.
•    Establish excellent working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate links with the University's Schools/Directorates & outside bodies, representing the University within the external wider UX community.
•    Investigate & analyse specific UX issues creating recommendations for improvement, influencing the University’s understanding UX and contribute to a shared repository of user research data.
•    Influence the development & continued enhancement of UX across University-wide systems.
•    Work with senior stakeholders and team members, to achieve programme objectives using heuristic/qualitative methods.
•    Plan, design & conduct usability testing both online & in the field, to validate design and development recommendations.
•    Influence how design decisions impact accessibility & usability of university-wide systems.
•    Conduct user research to test the effectiveness of new products and conceptual designs (inc early stage concept and prototype testing, wireframes, sketches, storyboards and interactive prototypes).
•    Communicate effectively the vision for the University's UX and foster understanding and support from stakeholders, building & maintaining effective relationships to ensure an understanding of user experience decisions.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

1.    Degree/NVQ 6 or equivalent professional membership/work related experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

2.    Significant, recent experience of UX design (including planning, designing and conducting a range of user testing approaches) - for web and mobile.
3.    Demonstrable experience of HTML, CSS and rapid prototyping, along with web and mobile application interface design: using wireframing and prototyping tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Axure, InVision, Marvel,, as well as user testing tools (e.g. Optimal Workshop)
4.    Experience of managing, executing and analysing usability test sessions.
5.    Able to demonstrate sufficient professional knowledge of UX research and testing to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers.

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working

6.    Ability to communicate complex issues, recommendations and findings effectively and professionally to a wide range of stakeholders, including high quality conceptually detailed UX designs.
7.    Evidence of ability to explore user needs and adapt the provision of UX research and testing accordingly, to ensure a quality service is delivered.
8.    Experience of working collaboratively with project and development teams.

Planning, Analysis and Problem solving

9.    Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; responsible for identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems with range of potential outcomes.
10.    Demonstrable knowledge of UX industry best practise and advances within UX research, testing and design practices and a willingness to undertake further training and development.

The Website and Intranet Improvements Programme will deliver a specific set of work packages designed to:
•    optimise the website for mobile devices
•    improve the effectiveness of the website for international student recruitment
•    analyse and propose resource to provide sustainable governance, quality assurance, compliance, testing and support of the website and intranet
•    provide personalisation of the intranet for Academic Schools
•    optimise the intranet for mobile devices
•    accelerate the migration of web content from legacy systems to the website
•    accelerate the migration of content from legacy systems to the intranet
•    pilot dedicated digital communications support for the University Research Institutes and other research group/centre websites
