Job Introduction

BBC Wales is looking for an experienced, self-motivated journalist with a passion for broadcast news to lead the team that produces the Wales Today service on BBC One Wales.

The successful candidate will have a track record as a dynamic, creative editorial leader;  a clear vision of how to serve TV audiences by delivering high quality programmes; ideas for sharing content across other platforms; a determination to broaden the diversity of stories and contributors on screen and a commitment to managing and developing staff.

As part of the leadership team in News, the Editor will contribute to the department's overall direction, editorially and managerially and support the introduction of new ways of working in the department to further develop the quality and impact of BBC Cymru Wales’ journalism. By setting a strong personal example, the Editor will inspire innovation and excellence.

Role Responsibility

The Editor is responsible for the main 1830 Wales Today programme, as well as bulletins on Breakfast, at lunchtime, 8pm, late and weekends, plus any TV News specials to cover breaking stories.  

Responsibilities include:

  • To provide editorial and creative leadership for all staff working on Wales Today (including output editors, producers, presenters, correspondents, reporters, crews, picture editors, graphics artists and directors).
  • To develop the programme's editorial offering, maintaining and building high standards of story-telling, and authoritative analysis.
  • To provide a vision and strategic direction for the team, setting challenging objectives and monitoring success.
  • To promote diversity in programming and staffing, recruiting and developing staff from a representative mix of the population in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and social background.
  • To ensure that new technology is successfully introduced and all output is delivered within budget, and in the most cost effective manner possible.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • First rate editorial judgement with experience of taking challenging editorial decisions on significant stories and dealing with matters of legal sensitivity under pressure
  • A track record as a dynamic leader who has led the creative development of teams and output
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with experience of managing, recruiting,  developing and motivating staff
  • An understanding of BBC Cymru Wales's audiences and a thorough understanding of news and current affairs in Wales.
  • Experience of producing creative and high quality TV news journalism that engages a broad audience.
