Job description

ONS produces statistics that are relied on by central and local government, businesses and individuals to make decisions and to plan for the future. To make sure our statistics are reliable and relevant, we need to collect information which reflects the whole population so ONS conducts around 80 different business surveys in the UK, as well as a number of social surveys including the census. We are currently undertaking a digital transformation program to transform our paper surveys to online services. It’s essential that the content of these digital services are well designed and meet digital standards so that they help our users understand how to complete the surveys. 

A key aspect of this post is to establish an overarching content design capability, putting in place the processes and standards needed to provide an over view and responsibility assuring the quality of content design across the data collection service. You will be responsible for the generation and editing of content for different mediums (web, paper, email) and to ensure consistency of approach in terminology and taxonomy of content provided by others in local teams who also produce content. You will work closely with service managers, programme directors and senior stakeholders to provide expert advice on how content design can be best utilised to meet the needs of those completing surveys, thereby supporting the objectives of ONS. 

Attuned to user needs, you will work with others to research, develop and analyse audience insight to ensure all content is effective and constantly evaluated. 

One of the key first pieces of work will be to undertake an audit of existing content in data collection projects undergoing development. The content design principles should be part of the audit and their review and implementation agreed cross-service/ONS. 
Responsibilities of the post 

● Alongside others, produce high-quality written material which reflects user journeys, needs and preferences ensuring project work is delivered to a high standard – for multiple channels but primarily web 
● scope, write, edit, proof, clear and publish user-focused content that is effective and tailored to a range of channels (including print, web, mobile and social media) as well as identified audience groups. 
● provide content design consultancy to internal clients, providing advice and feedback on proposals, drafts and other materials produced by subject matter experts or senior managers. 
● improve the user experience by ensuring that corporate content meets appropriate production standards (e.g. plain English, optimised for digital channels and in line with house style, working with the User Experience team to ensure that the content is accessible). 
● lead the work to evaluate content, using analytics data and user feedback to interpret content performance and identify improvements. Capture learnings and develop the evidence and insight base on key audiences, including developing personas where appropriate which will complement those that may be used in the development of the service or product. 
● manage the testing and iteration of content with target users, ensuring that it meets their needs and ONS business objectives. 
● Ensure that the content produced is translated in a sympathetic manner and that the context of the original copy is not lost. 

Skills / Experience 
Essential skills 

• experience of working as part of an agile delivery team and is aware of and understands agile methodology and how to apply an agile mindset to all aspects of work. Can work in a fast paced, evolving environment and utilising an iterative method and flexible approach to enable rapid delivery. 
• expert in stakeholder relationship management - identifying, analysing, managing and monitoring relationships with and between stakeholders. Able to communicate with stakeholders clearly and regularly, clarifying mutual needs and commitments through consultation and consideration of impacts whilst focusing on user needs. 
• expert in User-centred content design - able to design content to meet user needs and make complex language and processes easy to understand. Understands and implements style and standards. 
• expert in creating and iterating content across multiple channels which must include writing for the web. Is accountable for content decisions. 
• experience of creating content that is accessible and usable and supports those with lower digital skills 
• experience of training and guiding others and providing constructive feedback on their writing 
• experience in using metrics and user feedback to define and refine content
• experience in choosing the best format for displaying information to the user
