Job Introduction

Wales Today is BBC Wales’ flagship TV news programme.  It broadcasts seven days a week and has a reputation of driving the news agenda in Wales in a challenging, insightful and creative way.  The programmes provides a vital service to the Welsh audience by reporting on the main stories of the day but also in reflecting and challenging social, economic and political developments across the country.  The programme also has an important role in marking significant cultural and sporting events.

Role Responsibility

Broadcast Journalists are the foundation of Wales Today.  You will be expected to write news scripts, help produce items with reporters and correspondents and output bulletins.  You will also be expected to learn camera and editing skills to a high standard.  It is essential that BJs generate original stories and have ideas on how to make engaging and creative television.  Reporting and and working on outside broadcasts is also a feature of the role too.  There might also be presentation opportunities too.

The Ideal Candidate

Experience of TV journalism is essential for this role.  We are looking for a journalist with strong editorial judgement, research skills and experience of working in a live, broadcast environment.  You should have a strong broadcast voice and demonstrate an understanding of what makes good television. 

The successful candidates must be able to work enthusiastically, quickly and accurately under pressure.  In addition you need to have a thorough and in-depth understanding of Wales and Welsh Affairs.  An understanding of the Wales Today audience is a must for this position and the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate direct experience of issues affecting diverse communities in Wales.
