Simon Winstone discusses his new role, as Head of Drama in Wales for BBC Studios, in conversation with Sam Hoyle (Co-Executive Producer of the next series of Doctor Who). Simon is responsible for overseeing the drama series and serials team and productions based in Cardiff, building on their creative success and seeking out new opportunities.

In Spring 2017, BBC Studios (the BBC’s main TV production arm) appointed Simon Winstone as Head of Drama - Wales, to lead its world-class drama series and serials business, based at Roath Lock in Cardiff. BBC Studios can now make programmes for other broadcasters and channels in the UK and internationally, as well as the BBC.

Simon Winstone has outstanding experience; contributing to the success of two of the BBC's biggest programmes over the years – both EastEnders and Doctor Who.  He worked with Red Planet Pictures; first as Head of Drama (Wales), then Head of Development, and, most recently, as Executive Producer. Simon’s other impressive producer credits include Death In Paradise, By Any Means, and Dickensian.

Sam Hoyle has recently joined Doctor Who as Co-Executive Producer, working with the new Showrunner Chris Chibnall and Executive Producer Matt Strevens. Sam has worked extensively as a Script Executive in TV and Film, most recently with Chris Chibnall on all three series of the hit ITV show, Broadchurch and also on Chris' two films for BBC1 about The Great Train Robbery.
